Cairo Dispatch: Xi Jinping's September 2026 State Visit to Egypt
CAIRO — Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Egypt for a state visit confirmed by Egypt's Presidency on September 1, 2026, his first trip to the country since January 2016. The visit was part of a longer itinerary that also took him to the SCO summit in Bishkek and a state visit to Kyrgyzstan, and came at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
What happened
Officials described the talks as focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries and on regional issues, building on a joint statement signed in 2024. The visit lands in a symbolically loaded year: 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of Egypt-China diplomatic relations, first established May 30, 1956, when Egypt became the first Arab country and the first African country to formally recognize the People's Republic of China. Xi's only earlier visit, in 2016, coincided with the 60th anniversary and included a joint stop with El-Sisi at Luxor Temple. On the ground, Egyptian authorities put temporary traffic diversions in place around Cairo during the visit — Salah Salem Road, Nasr Road, the 6th of October Bridge, Ramses Street, the Ring Road, and routes near the Giza Plateau. No tourist site closed, and no tours were cancelled as a result.
What didn't happen
No tourism agreement, visa change, or new flight route was confirmed as a direct outcome of the visit — worth stating plainly, since that's the detail most likely to get inflated in secondhand coverage. Egypt's promotional push toward Chinese travelers, including an August showcase event in Beijing and a cultural exchange program now in its third season, predates the visit and continues independently of it.
